Leeds- 3 Liverpool- 3
I actually thought this was one of our better games of the season from an attacking sense but we’re leaking far too much at the back as per usual. I’m still crying out for us to play with a dedicated Cdm- nearly 2 months after this article. From a relatively easy run of games in the league (Forest (H), West Ham (A), Sunderland (H) and Leeds (A)) we only have a single win and 5/12 points. I think Slot should be given a full season after winning the league to prove himself at the very least but if we failed to qualify for the Champions League this season I would certainly be looking at alternatives in the Summer.
Player Ratings:
- Alisson- 5. I think he could've come for Leeds' equaliser at the end but we still should've defended it better. Decent game otherwise.
- Bradley- 6. I think he's our best right back as he's solid defensively and a threat going forwards and showed that again.
- Konate- 5. I thought he had a great game until he conceded the penalty which I think was a little harsh (the fact that it was overturned by VAR at least). Still it exposed the mental fraility of the team this season. He’s making a big mistake almost every game at the moment and I think him and Virgil would benefit from having a defensive midfielder screening them- they’re having to jump out of the defensive line a lot causing chaos behind them.
- Van Dijk- 5. Was very average and he has to shoulder some blame for conceding 3 goals even if he wasn’t directly at fault for any like he was in midweek.
- Kerkez- 6. thought he was his combative best today but the chemistry with Gakpo still isn't there going forwards.
- Gravenberch- 5. Had a positive first half before dropping off a bit. Has to take as much blame as Alli for conceding the third as he misjudged his header to set up Tanaka.
- Jones- 7. Thought he was great all game. The ball always seems to stick to him when he's under pressure and his pressing was great as he won the ball high a few times.
- Wirtz- 6. Thought he did okay without particularly standing out. It was pointed out on Sky that he’s being forced wide to get the ball a lot where he’s less effective. We need to start playing with an orthodox right winger again instead of Szoboszlai there as that would stretch the opposition defence more so he can pick up the ball more easily centrally. Gakpo stayed pretty wide today but the same wasn’t happening on the right.
- Szoboszlai- 7. Had a great game which I thought was capped off with his goal.
- Gakpo- 5. Didn't offer enough in my opinion. He just seems to take a bit too long when he gets in and around the opposition box.
- Ekitike- 8. Got 2 goals and his link up play was good as usual too.
Subs:
- Gomez- 6. He was robust in the challenge when he came on.
- Endo- 6. Got in the way of Leeds plenty when he came on.
- Isak- 6. Didn't have a huge amount of time to make an impact and I thought he was a bit lax out of possession considering he was fresh off the bench.
- Mac Allister- 6. I'm not a fan of Mac Allister playing as an attacking midfielder even if his dummy created the time for Szoboszlai to score. I don't feel like he's mobile enough to press properly from that position.
Referee – 8. Thought Anthony Taylor had a good game. I don’t recall him getting any big calls wrong. I thought we were a little unfortunate to concede the penalty through VAR (I later found out the VAR was John Brooks who is one of my least favourite referees these days) but the way we capitulated after was unacceptable.
